Location of the Lalakhal

Lalakhal is one of the most popular picnic spots in Sylhet. It is located in the Jaintiapur Upazila of Sylhet. It sits near the Bangladesh–India border, between Sylhet City and Jaflong, along a wide channel of the Sari River beside the Tamabil road. The area is surrounded by tea gardens, betel nut groves, hills, natural forests and flowing river water. Most visitors come to enjoy the striking blue water that originates from the waterfalls of the Indian hills in Cherrapunji. To reach the Zero Point of Lalakhal, tourists need to hire a boat and the boat ride itself is the main attraction.

There are two ways to reach Lalakhal. You can travel by microbus, but this means missing the experience of the boat journey, which is the highlight of the visit. The better option is to hire a boat from the Sarighat Boat Station. The trip from Sarighat to the main picnic spot takes about an hour. Boats must be hired regardless of which part of Lalakhal you plan to explore.

Why Lalakhal is famous

Here are the main reasons why Lalakhal is such a popular tourist spot:

The Enchanting Blue/Turquoise Water

  • Unique Color: The most distinctive feature of Lalakhal is the color of the Shari River's water, which flows through this channel. Due to the high mineral content and sand deposits coming down from the Cherrapunji Hills in India's Meghalaya state, the water often appears in vibrant shades, ranging from deep blue to turquoise or emerald green.
  • Clarity: The water is often crystal-clear, especially during the dry/winter season, allowing you to see the sandy bottom.

  • Scenic Boat Ride

  • Main Attraction: The primary activity is a boat ride along the wide channel. Drifting over the brightly colored water while surrounded by scenery is the core experience that draws visitors.
  • Viewpoints: The boat ride takes you toward the "Zero Point" near the Indian border, offering majestic views of the distant Meghalaya hills and waterfalls.

  • Lush Green Surroundings

  • Tea Gardens: Lalakhal is framed by rolling hills covered in lush greenery including the extensive Lalakhal Tea Estate located on the banks of the river. The contrast between the vibrant blue water and the green hills and tea gardens creates a picturesque landscape perfect for photography.
  • Tranquility: Being close to the border area and away from the main city, the spot offers a peaceful and serene environment.
  • Best Time to Visit Lalakhal

It’s tough to declare a single ‘best’ time to visit Lalakhal because the place looks stunning in every season. The best time to visit Lalakhal in Sylhet primarily depends on what you want to see: the clearest water or the lushest green scenery. The general consensus is that the best time is during the Dry Season and Post-Monsoon period.

Best Time for Clear Blue Water (Peak Season)

Period: November to February (The Winter/Dry Season)

  • Why: This is when the heavy monsoon rains have stopped allowing the silt and sediments in the Shari River to settle.
  • Water: The water is at its clearest, calmest and most transparent, showcasing the vibrant blue, turquoise or emerald green colors that Lalakhal is famous for.
  • Weather: The weather is pleasantly cool (around 10 ∘ C to 26 ∘ C), which is ideal for the long, scenic boat ride.
  • Bonus: You may also spot winter migratory birds and the reddish hue that sometimes gives the place its name.
  • Best Time for Lush Greenery

Period: Late September to October (Post-Monsoon)

  • Why: You benefit from the lushness left by the heavy rains while the river is still full, but the excessive flow that makes the water murky has begun to subside.
  • Scenery: The tea gardens and surrounding hills are a vibrant, deep emerald green.
  • Atmosphere: It is generally less crowded than the peak winter season, offering a more tranquil experience.
